Cross River State Governor, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu has reaffirmed his commitment to improving healthcare delivery in Cross River State through a strategic partnership with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH). This was highlighted during a recent meeting at the Dan Archibong Lodge in Calabar, where Governor Otu welcomed the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ikpeme A. Ikpeme, and his team. Prof. Ikpeme commenced the meeting by commending Governor Otu for his effective leadership and one year of remarkable achievements. He specifically appreciated the Governor's efforts in restoring Calabar's cleanliness and tranquility, setting an ideal environment for healthcare advancements. Under Prof. Ikpeme's stewardship, UCTH has achieved significant milestones over the past years. This includes the establishment of a state-of-the-art Level-3 Intensive Care Unit catering to both adult and pediatric cases, as well as the renovation and modernization of various wards and clinics. The hospital has also procured new equipment across critical departments such as clinics, theatres, laboratories, and radiology. These improvements are complemented by collaborative efforts with corporate entities like Nigerian Liquified Gas Limited, NNPC/TUPNI, Northwest Petroleum and Gas Company, and Lions Club International, which have contributed to specialized medical centers and ward enhancements. Furthermore, UCTH recently completed long-awaited projects such as the 56-suite House Officers' Quarters and a standard Isolation Center with a Molecular Laboratory. Currently, the hospital is in the process of constructing a 120-bed Accident, Emergency & Trauma Center and preparing for the installation of a 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine. These developments aim to enhance diagnostic and treatment capabilities, reducing the need for medical tourism among Cross Riverians and neighboring states. In terms of medical services, UCTH has introduced advanced procedures like Total Hip and Knee replacements, Laparoscopic appendectomy, and specialized interventions for neurological conditions and sports injuries. These advancements underline UCTH's commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare locally. Looking ahead, Prof. Ikpeme appealed to the state government for continued collaboration in areas such as power supply, internal road rehabilitation, and the procurement of cutting-edge equipment. This partnership is crucial for sustaining and expanding the hospital's capabilities to meet growing healthcare demands. Governor Otu, in response, applauded UCTH's achievements and pledged ongoing support for their initiatives. He emphasized his administration's dedication to improving healthcare access and quality across Cross River State. Governor Otu also expressed his commitment to collaborating closely with UCTH to ensure these healthcare improvements benefit all Cross Riverians. The meeting was attended by key government officials including Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, Deputy Governor; Prof. Owan Eno, Secretary to the Cross River State Government; Commissioner for Health, Dr. Egbe Ayuk; and senior management from UCTH. This gathering underscored a united effort towards achieving comprehensive and accessible healthcare delivery in Cross River State, promising a brighter future for healthcare in the region.
